Yoga is a low impact workout that links breath with movement for physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. While yoga is not a religion itself, it has been incorporated in Hindu, Buddhist and other Eastern traditions. Yoga has evolved over thousands of years to reflect a variety of styles and disciplines. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, which means to yoke or join the spirit and physical body together. At Crescent Yoga Studio in Midlothian, we modify all yoga classes for various bodies, ages and athletic abilities. There is something for everybody to practice and enjoy - Everyone is welcome here.
According to yogic tradition, there are seven “branches” of yoga. Westerners are most familiar with Hatha Yoga, which is the yoga of postures or poses (known as asanas) to enhance physical, emotional and spiritual health. All physical styles of yoga exercise fall under this hatha umbrella of yoga. With regular practice, yoga offers many important health benefits, including lower blood pressure, better stress management, increased strength and flexibility and even weight loss, thanks to a slow and steady calorie burn.
Yoga energizes the body and calms the mind. The more physical styles of yoga offered at Crescent Yoga Studio, like Vinyasa Flow and Power Yoga, tone the body and support natural weight loss through a steady calorie burn. Other gentler forms of yoga that we offer, such as Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga, focus on deep stretching and long-held postures to release muscular tension and stress. No matter what style of yoga that you choose to practice, you will receive many physical, emotional and spiritual health benefits and our instructors will work with you to achieve your specific goals.
One of our more popular classes is Basic Yoga, which is especially popular among new yogis. Proper alignment of yoga postures is important for classic yoga. To prepare for a yoga class at Crescent Yoga Studio, wear clothes that are comfortable but not too baggy, so both you and your yoga instructor will be able to monitor your body’s alignment and ensure you are not inadvertently doing anything harmful to yourself. In hotter classes like Heated Power yoga or more physical yoga practices, you might want to wear athletic clothes that wick away moisture. This will make it easier to hold poses and transition between poses without slipping. We carry many popular eco-friendly brands of yoga clothing and props in our CYS Boutique.
Our amazing yoga teachers put together and lead you through a series of standing and seated postures that are purposefully sequenced to not only stretch the muscles, but also to invigorate the body while relaxing the mind. In addition to the physical practice of yoga, our classes include meditation and breathing exercises known as pranayama. Breathing exercises are important for calming the mind while bringing awareness to the body. Our certified instructors in Midlothian will guide you through the exercises, aiding you with proper execution and making sure that you are always comfortable and relaxed throughout the class.
While many students enjoy practicing yoga at Crescent Yoga Studio, we encourage you to practice at home as well to supplement your classes. Yoga is meant to be practiced everyday, even a short practice will help stretch the body’s muscles and build strength and flexibility, while reducing stress and anxiety. This will also help you move on to one of our more advanced classes sooner than later.
