Does Yoga Help with Detoxification?

Your body is exposed to toxins from the day you're born. Over time, these toxins build up in your body and may affect your health. Practicing yoga may make it easier for your kidneys, liver, and lymphatic system to eliminate waste products and harmful toxins.

How Do Toxins Affect Your Body?

Avoiding toxins is impossible. They're found in pollution, pesticides, and heavy metals in the air, our food, and even the water we drink. Your lifestyle habits also increase your exposure to toxins. Stress, poor nutrition or sleep, and alcohol, drug, or tobacco use can contribute to toxin overload and make it harder for your body to get rid of toxins.

Health problems that may be related to toxin overload include:

  • Inflammation
  • Joint Pain
  • Headaches
  • Bloating or Swelling
  • Digestive Problems
  • Fatigue
  • Skin Issues
  • Weakened Immune System

Using the Natural Power of Yoga for Detoxification

Yoga may boost your body's detoxification efforts by:

  • Improving Lymph Flow. Your lymphatic system removes fluids that leak from the blood vessels and eliminates damaged cells, bacteria, and waste products from your body. Practicing yoga could help jumpstart a sluggish lymphatic system and improve function.
  • Boosting Circulation. Poor circulation lengthens the time it takes for oxygen and nutrients to circulate through your body in your blood. Circulation issues can also slow the removal of waste products. According to a mini review published in the International Journal of Yoga and Physiotherapy in 2019, yoga improves circulation of blood and body fluids.
  • Regulating the Digestive System. Yoga poses may stimulate your digestive system and help food and waste products move through the gastrointestinal tract more efficiently. Practicing yoga might also make bowel movements more regular and reduce gas and bloating.
  • Lowering Stress. Cortisol, a key stress hormone, builds up in the body when you're feeling stressed. High cortisol levels may slow down detoxification and cause inflammation, weight gain, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. A 2024 pilot study published in Frontiers in Public Health examined the benefits of yoga for stress reduction. Practicing yoga resulted in a significant reduction in stress in the 520 yoga practitioners researchers surveyed during the study.
  • Reducing Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide builds up in your body when food is converted into energy. The waste product is removed from the body when you breathe. Practicing deep yogic breathing while performing yoga poses makes it easier to remove carbon dioxide.

Try These Detoxifying Poses

Would you like to take advantage of the detoxifying benefits of yoga? These yoga poses are among the many poses that offer detoxification benefits:

  • Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose. The legs-up-the-wall pose involves creating an L-shape with your body by extending your legs straight against a wall while you lie on your back on the floor. The pose helps lymph drain from the legs and pelvis toward the heart and may decrease swelling in the legs and feet. Hold the legs-up-the-wall pose for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Seated Forward Bend. This pose promotes digestive health and calms the nervous system. During a seated forward bend, you'll extend your legs in front of you as you sit on your yoga mat. Inhale slowly while raising your hands above your head and lengthening your spine. Exhale and bend forward. Try to touch your ankles or toes. If you can't quite reach your ankles or toes, hold on to a strap placed around your feet or rest your head on a cushion placed between your legs.

Practicing yoga a few times a week can help you detoxify your body and improve your health. Looking for a yoga class in the area? Join one of our convenient classes led by experienced instructors.
